Millwall Drop it to Table-Topping Leicester

March 14, 2009 · 1 Comment

kenny-jackett-millwall_1452024

In what was considered by most to be the match of the week in League One, Millwall lacked the enthusiasm and stamina to hold off League-best Leicester City in a 1-0 defeat at the Den.

Manager Kenny Jackett, certainly could not have been pleased with his squad’s performance in front of the season’s best home crowd of 13,264.

Millwall’s former-favorite keeper, Tony “Denzil”  Warner, made his first appearance for LCFC today. He showed some great skill as the fans in the Den were used to seeing in the past including a game-saving stop on Ashley Grimes late in the game that would have equalized.

Jackett kept his men in the 4-3-3  formation that led them to victory in their last 3 matches, but the team’s lack of pace and creativity kept them from extending the streak. It may not have been a win that South London supporters expected, but hopes were high due to the recent run of form.

Next up: Another huge match. MK Dons recently passed the Lions in the table with a 6-2 thrashing of Oldham on Saturday, but we can draw even again with a strong performance away from home. This will be another tought test for our defense , with Striker Sam Baldock coming off of his brace against Oldham.

Prediction: Draw 1-1

Voodoo Doll: Matt Fryatt

March 13, 2009 · 3 Comments

voodoo-doll

We here at Millwall Pride want to do our part to contribute to the success of our beloved Millwall FC. Therefore we are using voodoo dolls for the opposition.

This week we are putting the hex on the high-scoring striker from Leicester City, Matt Fryatt. If one player could take the game into his own hands and prevent the Lions from winning, Fryatt would certainly be the one.

Here’s what we’ve done to our dirty little Fryatt Doll:

  • Stuck a pin in his eye  so he can’t see the crosses coming in from the wings
  • Tied his bootlaces together to cause him to trip everytime he enters the 18 yard box
  • Sat him in front of the telly and made him watch an American Idol marathon to drive him into insanity
  • Took the scissors to his doll balls, preventing him from producing little Fryatts that may one day grow up to face our Millwall clubs of the future
  • Bent him over, rammed a crazy straw up his arse and donkey punched him with our Robbo action figure with the kung-fu grip

I know this may seem like a crude way to address your opponent before a big match, but I challenge you to keep an eye on Fryatt throughout the match and watch for signs of our Voodoo magic at play.

Let us know what you would do to the Fryatt Voodoo Doll….

Top 5 Greatest Millwall Goalkeepers

March 5, 2009 · Leave a Comment

keller-millwall

This is the first in a series of “Top 5’s” for Millwall greats.

Now, when  you think of great goalkeepers it’s not always about longevity with a club, but rather the quality time spent with the club, no matter how long that may have been. Many times it’s the great keepers that fetch an expensive price tag in the transfer market and some tend to bounce around clubs and leagues. With that being said, we’ll attempt to list off the 5 best netminders in Millwall history. Listed in reverse order

5. Paul Sansome (1982-1987)

Paul Sansome had a very successful career with Millwall, appearing in 156 games, winning the Football League Trophy in 1983, promotion from Division 3 in 1985 and winner of Player of the Year award in the same season. In 1988 Sansome was sold to Southend and went on to record another 300 appearances for the Shrimpers.

4.  Tony Warner  (1999-2004)

“Denzil, Denzil what’s the score? Denzil what’s the score.” That was the chant supporters at the Den churned out for their favorite keeper. The T&T National joined Millwall from Liverpool and was named Player of the Year for the 2002/03 season. He spent 5 years stuffing strikers and deflecting penalty shots before leaving for Cardiff on a “free” in 2004.

3.  Bryan King  (1967-1975)

The goalkeeper that set the record for the most games played in the position at 302, Bryan King is a Millwall Hall of Famer and regarded with legendary status among fans at the Den. He transferred to Conventry City in 1975, but suffered a career-ending injury just 23 games into the campaign.

 2.  Alex Stepney  (1963-1966)

Regarded by many as Millwall’s greatest keeper, Alex Stepney was a fixture in the starting eleven for 156 games before being sold to Chelsea for then, an unheard of 50,000.  After one year with Chelsea he moved on to Manchester United where he featured in goal for the Red Devils for 12 glorious years. He was named one of the greatest keepers of the generation.

1Kasey Keller (1992-1996)

One of the most storied US National players, Kasey Keller began his professional career at Millwall straight out of college in Portland. He averaged over 13 clean sheets per season in the 4 year stretch as Millwall’s regular between the posts. Millwall couldn’t afford to keep Keller in the end and sold him to Leicester in 1996 for 900,000.

Do you think there are other greats missing from this list? Have your say…

Another Late Loss

March 1, 2009 · Leave a Comment

oldham

It was a horrible first half performance at the Den from our Millwall boys against League One nemesis Oldham Athletic.

Going into the locker room down 2-0 at the half, it didn’t even look like the Lions deserved to be on the same pitch as the Latics. Oldham’s first 2 goals came in the first 10 minutes of the match, and looked as if there would be many more to come.

In the second half the boys settled down and after Neil Harris’ penalty goal in the 56th, it appeared as if there was a chance of salvaging a point. When Ashley Grimes continued his fine form from last week by adding the equalizer in the 68th, the hometown Lions supporters actually thought they could escape with all 3 points.

It all unravelled late in injury time when Oldham winger Chris Taylor headed in a cross to send Millwall off with a heartbreaking defeat.

The loss drops Millwall behind Oldham who leapfrog into 4th, but the Lions do have 2 games in hand.

Next up: Away to Southend United. Southend currently sit at 13th in the table with 5 wins in their last 6 matches. They are hot right now and should prove a worthy opponent for Millwall at Roots Hall.

New Striker in Town?

February 20, 2009 · Leave a Comment

vincent-pericard

Millwall will add a new striker in hopes of adding scoring prowess.

It appears that Kenny Jackett has lured Vincent Pericard from Stoke City to Millwall on a short 3 month loan. It just doesn’t look like the best available signing that could have been made. Not only has Pericard yet to prove his worth as a consistent goalscorer,  he has had somewhat of a reputation problem and run-ins with the law.
